The Banker's widely-followed rankings are based on Tier One Capital as defined by Basel's Bank for International Settlements. By this yardstick, Alfa Bank with Tier One Capital of US $229 million is ranked 9th in Russia and 15th in Central and Eastern Europe. Alfa Bank is the largest private bank in Russia with assets of US $2.7 billion and shareholder equity of US $278 million. The Bank reported record profits in 2001 of US $85 million.
