X5 Retail Group N.V.
LSE-listed X5 Retail Group N.V. is the largest food retail company in Russia in terms of sales. X5 Retail Group N.V. includes the supermarket chains Pyaterochka, Perekrestok and Karusel. The company uses a multi-formatted strategy to develop three formats simultaneously: soft discounters, supermarkets and hypermarkets.
The Group’s sales reached nearly US $3.6 billion in 2006 with a total net trading area of approximately 466,000 m2. In 2006, approximately 446 million people shopped at the Group’s stores. More than 33,000 people work at the Group. As of 31 December 2006, the total number of the Group's stores (including franchises) was 1,234.
Pyaterochka
Pyaterochka is one of the largest food retailers in Russia with a dominant position in the high-growth discounter segment, offering a product range of up to 5,000 items covering the day-to-day needs of its customers.
As of 30 September 2006 Pyaterochka had a chain of 420 company-managed stores located in Moscow, St. Petersburg areas and other Russian regions. In addition to the company’s own stores, franchises operated 605 Pyaterochka-branded stores in the Russian regions outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, Kazakhstan and Ukraine as of 31 December 2006.
Perekrestok
Perekrestok opened the doors of its first supermarket in September 1995. The chain consists of three store formats: convenience stores, supermarkets and city hypermarkets. As of April 2007, Perekrestok stores operated in 15 Russian regions. Most Perekrestok stores offer more than 20,000 items (more than 35,000 items at the hypermarket).
In summer 1998, Perekrestok opened its own distribution centre (17,500 m2) providing significant and unprecedented cost and logistical advantages over its competitors. In 2005 Perekrestok entered into the other CIS markets by acquiring the SPAR supermarket chain in Ukraine.
Since its founding, Perekrestok has received important support from world-wide credit and financial institutions and continues this co-operation today.
As one of the first movers into the Russian retail sector, Perekrestok continues to expand and strengthen its position on the Russian market and, today, is rightfully considered one of the most competitive and efficient retail trade structures in Russia.
Karusel
At the end of 2007, Karusel was the fifth largest hypermarket operator in Russia by revenue. It operates in the north-west of Russia, including St.Petersburg, the Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Dzerzhinsk, Volgograd and Izhevsk. Currently (9 July 2007) there are 23 hypermarkets operating under the Karusel brand.
